Melamine was first synthesized in 1834 by German chemist Justus von Liebig, who isolated the substance while experimenting with nitrogen compounds. During World War II, metals and traditional wood materials became scarce and expensive. The U.S. Navy heavily adopted melamine because it was lightweight, practically unbreakable, and could withstand the rough conditions of military ships. Following the war, manufacturers realized they could mimic the smooth look of expensive porcelain at a fraction of the cost, and melamine became a very popular and accessible consumer product.

In excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or scratches. No maker's mark on the bottom but the colour looks like it would match with most any brand of melamine ware. Holds about 200ml
