In 1988, Prime Minister Brian Mulroney signed the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (CUSFTA) with President Ronald Reagan. The agreement was intended to eliminate tariffs and trade barriers between the two countries. It came into effect in 1989.
The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is no longer in effect. It was replaced by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) on July 1, 2020.
