Vintage North Bohemian Brown Coal Mines (Severočeské Hnědouhelné Doly) lapel/stick pin. The North Bohemian Brown Coal Basin (centered in the Most Basin) is a massive lignite deposit in the Czech Republic (formerly Czechoslovakia). Beginning as small 19th-century deep mines, it was aggressively expanded into open-cast pits under communist rule (1948–1989) to fuel heavy industry. During this period, the Most Basin (an area of over 1100 km2) was heavily mined for brown coal, used for burning in thermal power stations, electrical power stations and factories. This relentless extraction destroyed over 100 villages, towns and cities throughout the Most region (including Old Most, a centuries old medieval city). Their inhabitants were rehoused in large-scale new prefabricated paneled apartment buildings. The region became one of the most polluted areas in Europe due to the burning of low-quality brown coal, leading to severe acid rain and public health crises. After 1989, following the Velvet Revolution, the Czechoslovak (and later Czech) government established mining limits that legally protected surviving towns from being swallowed by the expanding pits. Massive desulphurization and ecological reclamation programs were also implemented.
