Vintage Uljanik Shipyard Yugoslavia/Croatia lapel/stick pin. The Uljanik Shipyard is located in Pula, Croatia, and is one of the oldest operating shipyards in the world, having been founded in 1856 by the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It built warships, starting with the sailing vessel SMS Kaiser in 1858, and later constructed submarines during WWI. This pin was made when Croatia was a part of the former Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia was a Balkan country that existed from 1918 to 1992, uniting South Slavic peoples under two main iterations: the Kingdom of Yugoslavia (1918–1941) and the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (1945–1992). Founded on the vision of unity after World War I, it was a diverse nation spanning Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia. In the Yugoslav era, Uljanik produced high-profile ships, including the Vis in 1956, the famous headquarters command ship used by Marshal Tito.
