Vintage Alkaloid Skopje pharmaceutical company lapel/stick pin. Alkaloid Skopje specializes in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and chemical products. The company was founded in 1936 in Skopje, North Macedonia, and began as a modest plant extracting opium alkaloids from local poppy heads with just 15 employees. Alkaloid was nationalized by the Yugoslav government in June 1945 and registered as a state-owned enterprise in October 1946. At this time they began expanding into medications and botanicals, launching its iconic pain reliever Caffetin in 1957 and the Good Nature line of herbal products in 1966. Becutan, Alkaloid's beloved line of pediatric cosmetics, was introduced in 1978. Following the independence of North Macedonia from Yugoslavia, the company was privatized and became a publicly traded joint-stock company in 2002.
Yugoslavia was a Balkan country that existed from 1918 to 1992, uniting South Slavic peoples under two main iterations: the Kingdom of Yugoslavia (1918–1941) and the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (1945–1992). Founded on the vision of unity after World War I, it was a diverse nation spanning Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia.
