The Lucas Bols company traces its roots back to 1575 when the Bols family opened a small distillery named 't Lootsje ("the little shed") in Amsterdam. "Erven Lucas Bols" translates to "The Heirs of Lucas Bols," a company name used long after the original founder's time. These heavy, salt-glazed stoneware or ceramic jugs typically feature stamped or embossed lettering reading "Erven Lucas Bols" and "Het Lootsje Amsterdam," usually with a capacity of 3/4 litre or 1 litre.
